What
is Digital Cable? Digital cable means that the signal coming
to your cable or satellite box is a digital signal. The digital
signal is transmitted as binary computer code. Instead of your cable
TV coming in an Analog format, it comes as binary code - 1’s
and 0’s.
Digital Cable does not necessarily mean that you
are getting DTV – Digital Television or HDTV – High
Definition Television. DTV and HDTV are a set of standards for Digital
cable. Both sets of standards basically mean what resolution the
picture is displaying at. Regular Digital cable displays at 480i
horizontal interlaced lines at the standard square 4:3 display ratio,
the same as analog cable except it is delivered in binary rather
than an analog signal. DTV (Digital Television) displays at 480p
horizontal progressive lines, which is the same resolution as a
DVD and is displayed at the standard square 4:3 display ratio. HDTV
(High Definition Television) displays at 720p horizontal progressive
lines (a higher quality picture than a DVD), uses a wide screen
format (16:9 display ratio), and most programs are encoded with
5.1 surround sound.
